Permanent Exhibits
Main Exhibit
The main exhibit hall is housed on the trading floor of the historic Memphis Cotton Exchange, a 3,000-square foot space. Here, the story of cotton is told through documentary films, oral histories and interpretive exhibits on:
- The history of Front Street and the Memphis Cotton Exchange
- Cotton: From Field to Fabric
- Cotton and Culture, which documents the extraordinary impact of cotton on culture and society
The Hall of Fame, located in the building's entry foyer, spotlights regional legends and industry leaders who have changed the face of the cotton industry.
The East Wing, which opened February 26, 2010, houses a new exhibit, The Changing World of Cotton, exploring the history of cotton production over the past 70 years from a contemporary perspective and incorporating three key elements:
- Advances in Biotechnology: The evolution of biotechnology including crop genetics and its impact on the economics of cotton growing and sustainability.
- Mechanization: The evolution of mechanization in the United States and its impact on planting, cultivating and harvesting cotton from the earliest days of cotton farming to the present.
- Environmental Sustainability: How advances in technology are enabling the cotton industry reduce its environmental impact.
This exhibit is designed for visitors of all ages, and features interactive and hands-on exhibits as well as a dedicated classroom space for student groups and special educational programs.
Temporary Exhibits
Our temporary exhibits, mounted in the main exhibit hall, change throughout the year. Our current exhibit, The Story of The Blues, explores the rich history of the blues and its relationship to the history of cotton.
